What's New At PSQ 5-26-11

Here's what's new at PSQ this week!

Batavia Quilt Show
Now in its fifth year, the Batavia Quilt and Textile Show is going to be even bigger and better!  Each year, I tell people that they should submit their quilts for this show and each year I hear, "Oh, my quilts aren't good enough to be in a show."  So, to prove to you all that any and ALL quilts should be featured in this show, I am bringing my very FIRST quilt out of the drawer, quilting it, binding it and putting that baby in the show.  I made this quilt about 11 years ago in a class I took at Stitches and Stuffing.  All my points are clipped and it doesn't lay flat but...on second viewing (it's been in that drawer a LONG time) it's not so bad!  And quilting it will do wonders!  So...you have no excuse and my guess is your quilts are a lot better than my first one.

I have application forms available at the shop OR you can go to the Quilt Show website at www.bataviaquiltshow.com and click on "Exhibitor Application".  The forms (but not the quilts) are due in by June 15 (quilts don't have to be turned in until July).  Stop making excuses and show the world (or at least the Fox Valley) your beautiful quilts!

Sandra Dallas
Thanks to those of you who joined us last Saturday to welcome best-selling author Sandra Dallas to the Batavia Public Library.  Ms. Dallas entertained us with a wonderful talk about her latest book "The Bride's House" and the trials and tribulations she and her husband have experienced during the renovation of their own "Bride's House" some of which appeared in the book.  She then joined us at the shop for an intimate question and answer session and a wonderful evening.
Books
French Braid Transformation by Jane Hardy Miller
- If you remember the wonderful "Frend Braid Quilts" book that came out several years, then you'll be anxious to see Jane Hardy Miller's second foray into braided quilts.  This book takes the French Braid style even further AND...it's all strip pieced.  Quilts that look dimensional and woven are actually pieced using a simple, strip method (it's all in the placement).  Check out the gorgeous "Celtic Not" and the fun and funky "Wavelet" quilt, but my favorite is "Erector Set".  The book is chock full of great designs made simple - Yahoo!

Pumpkin Patch Threads by Need'l Love - Customers are always asking me if they can combine wool with cotton and the answer is YES!  The folks at Need'l Love have been doing this beautifully for years and their latest book, "Pumpkin Patch Threads" is one of their best.  There are quilts, pillows, rug hooking, punchneedle, pincushions and more!  I know it's hard to think about Fall when the weather is finally getting warm BUT if you start now, by the time the weather starts to turn cold again (and it always does), your house will be outfitted in beautiful fabric art!

Wonky One-Block Quilts - Simple Technique, Dramatic Results by Marlous Carter - Now I know we have all made a "wonky" quilt or two in our quilting lives so I was thrilled to learn that Marlous Carter has made "wonky" not only acceptable but beautiful.  With a simple technique, four patch blocks, rail fence and more can be turned on their sides (literally) and with great effect!  Check out how courthouse steps can go "wonky" and my favorite "Boardwalk" AND then check out the Bodacious Borders section of the book - a great and funky way to add an extra touch to an already funky quilt.

Strip-Smart Quilts - 16 Designs from One Easy Technique by Kathy Brown - I am one of those people who judges a book by its cover and so I grabbed this one immediately.  The cover quilt features a gorgeous red, white, blue and cream quilt that looks difficult but isn't.  All the quilts in this great book are simply strip pieced but each quilt looks different and dazzling.  I know I usually tell you my favorite patterns from the books I talk about but with this one, I LOVE them ALL!  There are great options for precut strips, fat quarters or yardage and ideas for scrappy or not.  Perfect!

 Fabric
Classic Holiday Fabrics by Timeless Treasures
- Yep, the Christmas fabric just keeps on coming.  This group of fabrics is VERY traditional with golds, reds, greens and more.  There are two wonderful panels - a classic Santa Claus and a Nativity scene (just quilt, bind and your done!).  There are also beautiful fabrics in rich tones with metallics featuring musical instruments, poinsettas and holly.  Beautiful.

AND, though I wasn't in the shop today, I heard that ANOTHER Christmas line (nearly 30 bolts) arrived this afternoon.  I'll have pictures and an update on the blog next week but if you just can't wait...stop in and see it for yourself.  It's a whimsical/folksy line in subtle dones of brown, cranberry, green and cream.  Non-traditional but very homey and sweet.  There's a panel, too!

One Flew over the Deering's Nest!

The Three Little Birds
Hi all! If you remember, I wrote a few weeks ago about the robin who had built a nest in our front porch light. There were three eggs inside and the birds hatched about 10 days ago. I will admit, it has been a very stressful 10 days for me as I worried about the baby birds each day. We've had wind and rain storms, cold and more. I woke up each morning and ran down the stairs to make sure they were okay. Then yesterday, Patrick sent me an email at the shop that one of the birds had taken flight (well, hit the ceiling of our porch first but..) and was flying around the yard. When I got home, two birds were left in the nest and I sat for over an hour until bird number two stretched its wings and took off. Bird number three, however, decided now that he (or she - I can't tell) had the whole nest to himself, and he wasn't leaving. We checked back several times yesterday and while he would get out of the nest and stand on the edge, he always headed back to the comfort and safety of the nest.

Mom and Dad bird were standing on our porch, looking up at the nest and chirping away. I imagine the conversation went something like this, "When will that child EVER leave the nest?" "I know, it's been 10 days, how much longer do we have feed and support these kids?" "Enough is Enough." "For the love of Pete, get OUT!"

And all the while, the baby bird is hunkered down in the nest thinking, "Why would I ever leave this place? It's warm and cozy. Mom and Dad bring me food AND it's rent FREE!" "Are they crazy, I'm NEVER leaving!"

Well, that's how I imagine it anyway. But, this morning when I got up, the nest was empty and there was a tiny "For Rent" sign stuck into the nest! :) No actually, my guess is Mom and Dad backed up the U-Haul and told baby bird number three it was time to FLY...or else!

I saw Mom back in the nest this morning and I kid you not, she was cleaning it! I'm guessing they are hoping to rent the nest out to another family of birds - maybe a nice family of cardinals just moved here from the east coast! And while I'll miss our little feathered friends, I won't miss the lost sleep and the stiff neck from staring up at the nest. Oh, and I'm looking forward to being able to use our front door again!
Last Bird Standing But...alas, not flying!

The event is FREE but you must have tickets to attend (available at PSQ or the Batavia Public Library), and she will be talking about her new book, "The Bride's House".

If you haven't already ordered your copy, stop in the shop and pick up your copy. All of Ms. Dallas' novels are historically based and have characters who quilt (history and quilting - my two favorite things!). We will also have copies of the book available at the Batavia Public Library on May 21 when Ms. Dallas comes for an author talk and reading beginning at 3 pm. Fabric
Jolly Snowmen by Clothworks - More Christmas fabric is arriving every day and I'm going crazy. I LOVE IT ALL! Jolly Snowman is so cute and fun. The panel is adorable with...Snowmen (of course!), there's a fantastic border stripe that would be perfect to make the Easy Striped tablerunner pattern, several fun coordinates including two great plaids, some tone on tones with snowflakes and more! I took the panel home and just quilted it up with a great snowflake pantograph. So fast and easy! It's a great wall hanging and will make perfect gifts when the Holidays come around. Let me get the binding on and I'll post a picture of it on the blog. In the meantime, Janet is making up a sample of an adorable Christmas quilt featuring the panel in the middle and half square triangles on the top and bottom. Another quick and easy project that we have ALREADY kitted up! I'll post a picture of the quilt on the blog tomorow and we'll have the sample up in the store in the next week or so!

Christmas Traditions by Quilting Treasures - This Christmas line is hard to describe but is really pretty, unique and versatile. There is a panel that just needs to be quilted and bound to make a cute table topper and features Christmas designs through the ages. There are also fun Christmas cookies, tone on tones, plaids, checks and more.

Oompa Loompa Dupidty Doo - Amelia's Got a Riddle for You!

We've all been there, right? We're sitting in an "informational" parent meeting for the school musical (or insert any other after school activity) and the sign up sheet for volunteers goes around. We're new to my daughter's school this year so I thought helping out with the Middle School Musical would be a good way to meet other parents and do my part. (Yeah, I know, you're thinking I'm soooo naive! And you're right!). Two days later I receive an email from the Director thanking me (and my committee for signing up) and telling them to direct all their questions to Bonita Deering, the Prop Supervisor! Yikes, how did THAT happen? The only thing I can think is that my name had appeared first on the list of parents interested in helping with props. (Note to self, NEVER SIGN UP FIRST!)

The next thing I know, I (and my equally naive committee) were going through a list of items that we needed to procure. A list that included (and I am NOT kidding on this one) a fluglehorn. What in the world is a fluglehorn? You see, my child was an "Oompa Loompa" in the Elgin Academy production of Willy Wonka, Jr. and so for the next two months my life would revolve around the search for all things Wonka.

Long story short (and you know how good I am about that!), it came to opening night of the muscial. Patrick and I were settled in the second row and enjoying the musical when the most horrible feeling of dread came over me. You see, amongst the props I was responsible for were the candy bars WITH and WITHOUT the golden tickets. If you know the story of Charlie Bucket, he opens several Wonka bars BEFORE he finds the one with the golden ticket. AND, I had gone to great pains to put the candy bars WITH the golden tickets in one ziploc bag (labeled accordingly) and the ones WITHOUT golden tickets in another labeled bag. BUT, while sitting in that darkened theatre it struck me that in the chaos of the back stage activities AND middle schoolers being...well, middle schoolers, those candy bars could have been taken out and confused.

Now I'm in a sweaty panic. What if Charlie opens the wrong candy bar. The one he gets for his birthday. When he's supposed to open it, find NO golden ticket and then be serenaded by his family to "Cheer Up Charlie". How misplaced would THAT song be if, in fact, he opened the candy bar to find a GOLDEN TICKET. OMG - it never crossed my mind that I should have marked the individual bars differently so that the actors on stage would know which was which. WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT UNTIL NOW.

So...I spent the twenty minutes between the opening of the first candy bar and the last when, Charlie, in fact, DOES find the golden ticket, feeling nauseous and wondering how popular I would be when word got around that it was Prop Supervisor Bonita Deering who screwed it all up and ruined the Middle School Musical. How would they know, they had my name in big, bold letters listed as PROP SUPERVISOR right in the program for all to see. During those twenty minutes, I'm invisioning having to home school Amelia when she is shunned from all school activities or at the very least being banned from all parental volunteering duties (oh wait, that part might not be too bad! :))

But...thanks to fate and the organizational skills of the wonderful Director, Charlie opened the right candy bar each and every time (in both performances) AND I've been asked to help with props again next year. Wait a minute...maybe this didn't turn out so great after all!

Jingle All the Way Sample

Well, I had high hopes that I would get the binding sewn down on my Jingle All the Way sample last night but...the best laid plans, as it were.  Several of you wanted to see it now, so here it is.  I believe the kit will sell for just under $50 (not including the pattern which is out of Time Out Quilts by Atkinson Designs.

I just love the vibrant colors and the hints of white.  It's a good size lap quilt and it was so quick and easy to make.  Just strips and rectangles.  No seams to match.  Yahoo!

What's New At PSQ 5-4-11

Ask the Trainer This Friday
Just a reminder that my personal trainer, Jackie Kold will be at PSQ this Friday, May 6 from 7 to 8:15 pm to talk about the benefits of exercise and to answer any questions you may have on health and fitness.  If you plan to attend, just call the shop and have your name added to the list.  There is no charge and I think you'll find Jackie very interesting and motivating.  I know she motivates me to get my butt out of bed every morning to exercise and that's saying something!  Photo at right is me during one of my weekly training sessions!

Fabric
CHRISTMAS FABRIC HAS BEGUN TO ARRIVE!  And there is more where that came from!
Jingle All the Way by Nancy Halverson - I LOVE this fabric designer and I order her fabric every year.  Jingle All the Way is so gorgeous with traditional red and green plus gold, cream, browns AND my personal favorite TEAL!  What I love most about this line is that it CAN scream Christmas but it DOESN'T have to.  There are gorgeous stripes and plaids, holly berries and yummy tone on tones.  There are a few reds in this line that are going to fly out of the shop they are sooooo gorgeous!  I've already made a sample (just 18 Fat Quarters) and it looks great.  Easy and fast to make (I made it in just two days), it's bright and colorful and a nice size to cuddle under.  Check out the photo on our blog (details below).  Kits are available now!  And, the photos above are only PART of the line!

Winter Wishes by Benartex - Another Christmas line, this fabric features playful snowman in a fabulous border print (this one would be perfect for the Easy Striped Table Runner pattern).  There's also a great stripe on the bias (perfect for a binding) and a playful crooked plaid PLUS there are polka dots and snowflakes, too!

Yuletide Magic by Benartex - Now that I have the sample done from the Nancy Halverson, I've started on the sample for this elegant Christmas line (yes, I'm addicted to Christmas quilts AND tree skirts but more on that later!).  This line is deep and rich in shades of red, gold, black and white.  Not classic colors, for sure, but elegant with fabrics that look like they've been stenciled (check out the pictures on my blog) and with a panel that looks like you've spent days piecing block after block.  There's a free pattern and I'm going to burn the midnight oil to get the sample done asap.  If you just can't wait, we already have kits made up.  Yep, we're just that fast!  :)

Princess Mirah Batiks - Oh yes!  Even MORE batiks have arrived.  Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo of these beauties before they got mixed in with the rest of our batik collection BUT we got in over 30 more new bolts in all colors and designs.  If you haven't been in lately to check out our batiks, now is the time.  The book cases are spilling over and the colors are bright, bold and beautiful

Magazines
Quilt Sampler Magazine - Called the "ultimate Shop Hop" this magazine features the top eleven quilt shops across the country (yes, my dream is for PSQ to appear in this magazine some day - a girl can dream!).  It's so much fun to see other shops and each shop designs a pattern so you're getting a fun magazine to read AND 11 patterns for the price of just one magazine.  BUT...get your copy soon.  I've already sold over half of the magazines we got in and I've only had them a few days!
